How do I get an Instruction Permit?

There are two ways to get your permit:

1) Pass the state knowledge test  -or-
2) Enroll in a teen driver's ed course

You can do both of those things with us!

We help with the first steps, but only the Department of Licensing office (DOL) can issue instruction permits. Currently, you can also obtain a permit online with the DOL.

We'll cover both options in detail below:

Method 1: Pass the knowledge test

If you are 15-1/2 years of age or older, you can simply take and pass the state knowledge test. Once you pass the test, your score is reported to the DOL within an hour, and you can make an appointment to get an instruction permit in person (with your photo on it), or go online to the DOL's License Express website and get a permit right away (without your photo on it).

When you get your permit either online or in person, you'll receive a paper permit (no photo) instantly, and the plastic card will be mailed to you in about 2-3 weeks. Permits are valid for one year, and can be renewed.

Method 2: Enroll in a teen driver's ed course

On your 15th birthday, you are eligible to get a permit if you are enrolled in a driver's ed course and no sooner than 10 days before the first classroom session. This means that if your course starts on June 15th, you can get your permit on June 5th or later. Here's how to get the permit if you are enrolled in a course:

Step 1: Register for a license number

You must register with the Department of Licensing for a license number. You can do that on the DOL website here. This takes about 20 minutes to complete, and you'll need your identification info handy (birth certificate, Social Security number, etc). When you finish registering, you'll end up with a license number that looks like this: WDL123ABC23B. If you already have a Washington state ID card, you already have this number and can skip this step.

Step 2: Send us the license number

With that license number, we can confirm your enrollment in driver's ed with the DOL. You can call, text, or email that license number to us at 206-207-5555, or drive@i5driving.com.

Step 3: Obtain a permit when eligible

You are eligible to get your permit no sooner than 10 days before the first classroom session. You can either get a permit online, or in person.

Online: Log in to License Express with the username and password you created when you registered for the license number. You should see the link to get an Instruction Permit on your dashboard page.

In person: Make an appointment with the DOL to get a permit in person. Appointments are very difficult to get, and only 30 days of appointments are offered at a time. They are released early in the morning, so wake up real early to look for one. You can schedule an appointment here.

You will receive a paper Instruction Permit that doesn't have your photo on it, but is valid for a short while. Make extra copies in case you misplace the first one :)
