What type of ID is required?

What type of identification do I need for a lesson or a license exam?

To take a license test, you must have some sort of photo identification, and a Washington license number. The license number is free, and you can learn more about getting that number here on our website.

For the ID requirements, you will need something with your photo on it, preferably from a government agency, a school, or some other municipality. It does need to be an original document, not a copy, and not in electronic form. Below is a partial list of what is generally acceptable:

WA State ID Card

Can be expired up to 6 years.

Other State ID Card

Also can be expired up to 6 years.

Passport

Any country, can be expired.

Student ID card

We must see the original student ID card, and not a photocopy. This can also be one from a previous year.

Yearbook Photo

A recent yearbook photo is acceptable, in addition to the school's website that lists your student record + photo.

Parent Info

Under age 25? a parent can accompany you and present a WA Driver License or USA Passport plus your birth certificate.

Passport Card

Permanent Resident Card

Employment Auth. Card

Travel Visa

Military ID

Asylum Document

The above sample list is for license testing purposes only.

The ID requirements to take a state knowledge test or a driving exam are simpler. When you go to the Department of Licensing to get a new identity document, you'll need to bring more.

To get a Washington State ID Card, photo Instruction Permit, or Driver License, there is a longer list of documents you will need to bring. You can view this list on the DOL website here.
