How do I get a WA driver's license?
These steps must be done in order!
If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
1) Pass the state knowledge test
2) Pass the state driving test
That's it! Adults do not have to attend classes, get an instruction permit, or practice a minimum number of hours. We offer both the official state knowledge test and the state driving exam.
You'll need a Washington ID number (not an ID card) before you can take these tests. If you have a WA state ID card, you already have this number. If you don't have one, visit our page on how to obtain a WA ID or license number.
Once you pass both tests, visit a DOL office to get a license. You'll receive a paper copy in person (no photo) and the plastic card with your photo on it will be mailed to you within 2-3 weeks.
If you are under age 18, you have more steps to take...
What are all of the requirements to get a license if I'm under age 18?
All persons under age 18 who want a driver license must:
- Complete an approved Traffic Safety Education Course (driver's ed)
- Obtain and hold an instruction permit for at least 6 months
- Pass the state knowledge test
- Pass the state driving test
- Get at least 50 hours of practice, and at least 10 of those hours at night
- Be at least 16 years old
Do I have to complete these steps in a particular order?
Somewhat, yes. You must be 15-1/2 to take the state knowledge test OR have completed a teen driver's ed course. You can't take the driving test until you pass the knowledge test AND finish a driver's ed course.
Here is a typical path for teens to get their license:
- Step 1: Enroll in a driver's ed course
- Step 2: Get a permit 10 days before classes start
- Step 3: Finish a driver's ed course
- Step 4: Pass the state knowledge test
- Step 5: Pass the state driving test
- Step 6: Wait out the rest of the 6 months and be at least 16
Once I complete all of those steps, then what?
Once you are eligible by completing all of the steps, you can visit a DOL office to get your license in person. If you obtained your permit in person, your photo appears on your permit, and you have taken the vision exam already, you may be able to apply for the license online through License Express.
What laws have changed for 2027?
The laws have changed! Starting January 1, 2027, the age limits are increasing every year until 2030. If you were born on or after January 1, 2009, you'll have to complete the teen driver education course if you want a driver's license before age 22.
For 2031 and 2032, a shorter course would be required to obtain a driver's license for those ages 23 and 24, but those limits have not been set yet.
